PRODUCTION

This presents the performance of traditional classic Kathak repertoires in a solo and group choreography. This is available throughout the year.

 

The new production is for a particular period of time when it is created and performed in a touring style. The touring production also presents education and masterclass workshops as well as lecture-demonstrations, apart from performances.

 

The last production Urjah was created and toured in 2007-2009 with digital video projection performed by four dancers.

 

Nilima Devi loves innovation and creativity in her classical work which leads to a new contemporary language based on the strong footage of classical techniques. She's open to work with other experienced artists of different disciplines and collaborate to produce new work which is exciting and cutting edge.

 

The new production is in the pipeline entitled Hasten Slowly.

COLLABORATION

The last production Nilima Devi did was Plurality of Abhinaya which was created in 2016 with Anusha Subramanyam, a beautiful collaboration of Kathak and Bharatnatyam combined into one.

She's open to work with other experienced artists of different disciplines and collaborate to produce new work which is exciting and cutting edge.

WORKSHOPS & EDUCATION

Nilima Devi has been delivering workshops within communities, schools, colleges and universities for the past 40 years in Leicester and the East Midlands.

 

These workshops consist of one-off introductory session or series of workshops leading to a performance based on the themes of Indian Festivals such as Diwali and Holi; Art & Culture or Hindu Gods and Goddesses.

 

Thousands of young people benefitted by taking part in these workshops led by Nilima Devi and musicians.

 

As a dynamic and experienced artist, Nilima Devi will be available to deliver these workshops in schools, colleges and communities and accommodates to the needs of the organiser.

 

She uses the skill of storytelling in a very creative way using the gesture language of Kathak and body mime. She has also delivered countless folk and creative workshops to educate people in the diversity of Indian dance forms.

DANCE

MASTER CLASSES


This involves senior students of dance or dancers from any other discipline wanting to expand their knowledge, dance techniques and further understanding of the art form.

 

Nilima Devi has developed a unique Kathak style and combines the beautiful style of her guru, Pandit S Gangani, Padma Shri Guru Kumudini Lakhiya and Pandita Guru Rohini Bhate.

Masterclass workshops involve the following aspects:

1. Polishing dance techniques

2. Traditional poetic Kathak kavit in Brajbasha

3. Technical compositions such as various types of parans, chakradra, todas, tihais and footwork improvisation.

4. Learning of dance items such as bhajan, thumri, holi, nayikas, pada and many more.

DANCE

LECTURE DEMONSTRATION

This involves, specific to the Kathak style, explaining the history and development of Kathak dance leading to a presentation of two main aspects of Kathak such as nritta (dance techniques involving compositions) and nritya (expressive repertoires).

Another type of lecture-demonstration is available on the Introduction to Indian dance and watching the Sinjini DVD.

Introduction to Indian dance lecture-demonstration also involves the demonstration of various dance pieces from classical to folk, either as a solo artist or with group dances.
